Discovery
What this process does
Discovery searches commercially important shipping corridors for vessels that are not currently being tracked. Candidate vessels are enriched using AIS metadata, route intelligence, commodity classification and scoring rules before being evaluated against configurable quality thresholds. High-value vessels are added to the tracked universe so future SMART ingest cycles automatically include them, expanding FlowEdge coverage while controlling API credit usage.

SMART Live Ingest
What this process does
SMART Live Ingest refreshes the tracked vessel universe using the latest AIS observations. It updates vessel positions, destinations, cargo estimates and routing information, then reconstructs voyages and recalculates daily commodity flows. The process produces the current market intelligence signals, evidence inputs and dashboard analytics used by FlowEdge; unlike Discovery, it works only on vessels already in the tracked universe and is intended to run frequently.

Discovery + SMART
What this process does
Discovery + SMART performs a complete operational refresh. It first expands the tracked vessel universe by discovering new commercially significant vessels, then immediately executes a SMART Live Ingest using the expanded universe. This mode is best suited to scheduled daily refreshes or after changes to geographic coverage, ensuring newly discovered vessels contribute to market intelligence without waiting for a later ingest cycle.
